Broadly speaking yes, although the type of bike might determine which kind of conversion you can have. Hub motor conversions like 'The Swytch-Buster' can fit almost any kind of bike. However for a mid drive conversion there needs to be room in the frame to fit the battery, and the bike needs to have derailleur type gears (i.e. not hub based Sturmey Archer types). can Disc brakes are desirable but not essential. Yes, ebike conversions are legal to use on the road, subject to the power of the kit installed, (250W maximum) and speed up to which assistance can be given (25kmh / 15.5mph). If fitted, a throttle may only apply assistance up to the speed of 6kmh. The 'Swytch-buster' and 'Rangemaster' front hub systems (when fitted with the standard 250W motor), and 'Commuter' mid drive set up are all road legal. 'The Beast' is not road legal and can only be used on private land (with land-owner's permission). The UK regulations in full can be found on the 'why mid drive' page.

There are a number of variables here - from tyres, to weight, riding style, battery size and power settings used. Using low power assistance settings could deliver 2 or 3 times the range of using maximum power assistance, which means range estimates can be variable.

Most factory manufactured ebikes have very optimistic range claims. The range stated for these conversions is far more accurate! The capacities of the batteries fitted to our conversions are generally much larger than factory ebikes, and have a correspondingly larger range.

The conversions come with 12 months warranty on parts and installation. In the very rare scenario that you have any issues, then replacement parts are usually available in a week or less - a far cry from the months spent waiting for parts on factory bikes!

Depending on the type of installation, the conversion can add between 6-9kg to the weight of the bike, but the benefit of the added power means you never feel it whilst riding. The battery adds about half of the extra weight, so popping it off can help with carrying up stairs, loading into cars and the like!

Bafang is the market leader in aftermarket e-bike motors, and provides the best performance, usability and reliability available. The BBS series of motor are legendary. Google them if you want to know more.

LVBU are a slightly newer player in the eBike space, but the technology is superb, and parts support far better than other hub motor manufacturers.

Yes, although will depend on your specific spec required. The lead time on parts, should you need something that isn't in stock, is usually less than a week after ordering.

Only a question for mid mount motors. The width of your bottom bracket (the section of frame between your pedals/cranks) needs to be between 68 and 73mm in order to fit the replacement motor. If in doubt get out the tape measure! If you have a PF30 size bottom bracket (likely if you can see all the way through between your cranks), a special adaptor is required at about £25.

The most common breakdown experienced by riders on the more powerful conversions is a broken chain - old chains struggle to tolerate the high loads, which are frequently experienced in the off-road environments these conversions are used in. It will happen without warning at the worst possible time - trust me :D So avoid it by pre-emptively fitting a new chain - they're cheap! (£15-25)

Generally speaking, the bike you already own! But if you're looking to buy a bike to convert, then it will depend on your use case.

For commuting, the ideal base would be a high quality hybrid bike. Front suspension may be desirable for bumpy London roads, at the increased speeds you'll be travelling at.

For off-road riding, a high quality mountain bike with enough space in the frame for a downtube mounted battery. Rear rack batteries don't work so well off road!
